Roeland and Debra
Roeland was born in The Netherlands, grew up in South Africa, and made his way back through Europe to Canada where he met Deb. With degrees in Environmental Horticulture, and Biology respectively, a combined love of natural environments and cultural curiosity has been the foundation of their decades of travelling the world.
Retiring in Ottawa, in 2013, (Roeland was the Arbourist and Horticulturalist for the Official Residences of the Governor General of Canada, and the Prime Minister of Canada; Debra was a Senior Executive at Health Canada), they sold everything they owned and made their way slowly around the globe revisiting favourite places and discovering new ones. From summiting Kilimanjaro and camping their way across the Kalahari and Namib deserts of southern Africa, to spending months at sea on cargo ships and so many places in between, their travels are punctuated by a deep appreciation of the impermanence of life and the kindness of strangers.
They have followed Cohousing communities online for a few years and discovered West Wind Harbour just as they were seeking a renewed sense of belonging, and of having more time to give back and continuing to learn. With that in mind they look forward to embracing a caring community, amongst fascinating fellow adventurers, and their four legged friends!
